Kassian's jaw set hard, the lines in his face deepening. He looked at Isaev with narrowed eyes, and he didn't say anything immediately, letting time stretch and pass between them.
He searched Isaev's gaze.
Finally, he glanced away, downward and off to the right.
He took in a deep breath and let it out, the set of his shoulders straightening.
"No," he said, quietly.
His mouth twisted, faintly, and he looked up again.
"You're an Isaev," Kassian said, as if that explained everything.
Maybe it did, but he continued anyway.
"You wouldn't bother unless it was personal. And Borishnakov wasn't worth that kind of effort."
